The Battle of Schnee Eifel occurred in December 1944 during the early days of the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive on the Western Front in WWII.

The Schnee Eifel, a forested ridge in eastern Belgium, was held by U.S. forces, mainly the 106th Infantry Division. On December 16, 1944, German forces launched a surprise attack, encircling and overwhelming two regiments of the 106th. After intense fighting and lacking supplies, around 6,000 American soldiers were forced to surrender—one of the largest mass surrenders of U.S. troops in the war.

The loss was a setback for the Allies but did not stop their eventual counteroffensive and victory in the Ardennes.

 Summary:

Objectives:

6 VP’s, plus three Permanent Medal Objectives for the Axis (Turn Start) for Roth by Prum, Auw by Prum and Pleialf), plus a Sudden Death Exit hex for the Axis

Battlefield:

Winter countryside with a hilly ridge across the center, with scattered forests, and a road encircling almost the entire battlefield.

Troops:

Allies – 8 Infantry including two Engineers, 3 Armor (Tank Destroyers), 2 Artillery

Axis – 9 Infantry including one Machine Gun unit and five Elites,  2 Armor, including one Tank Destroyer, 1 Artillery

Special Weapons:  Tank Destroyers, Machine Guns.

Allied Strategy:

1. Historically, the Allies got routed, so the primary goal here is to protect the permanent medal objectives and the exit hex. 

2.  Get your two Artillery into play quickly and use them as much as you can to take out the enemy.  

3.  Your two Tank Destroyers on the left flank should move forward, in and around to defend the city of Roth by Prum, which is a Permanent Medal Objective.

4.  Your other Tank Destroyer and two Artillery should defend the city of Blelaif, which is another Permanent Medal Objective.

Axis Strategy

1. Historically, the Axis had the largest victory of the war in this battle, so speed and attack are your principle tools.

2.  Get your Tank Destroyer and Infantry on the right flank mobile and engaging the enemy as soon as you can.

3.  On your left flank, you have overwhelming advantage with your four Infantry units, and one Armor.  Use it to overwhelm the defenses at the town of Blelaif to gain the Permanent Medal Objective.

December 19th, 1944: They sprang the Longvilly Trap because we were stretched thin and caught standing still—never a good idea in a shooting war. Near Longvilly, ahead of Bastogne, the enemy pushed armor hard through the Ardennes and found American units sitting exposed on narrow, jammed roads with broken communications. The Germans hit fast and coordinated tanks with infantry, rolled right over isolated formations, and smashed them before they could maneuver. It was a bloody setback, no question—but it bought the enemy only time, not victory. Longvilly opened the road to Bastogne, yes, but it also set the stage for us to dig in, turn, and hit back harder—because wars aren’t won by trapping men, they’re won by destroying the enemy, and that bill was coming due.

Summary:

This is a fun and exciting scenario as the Americans attempt to survive the seige of Bastogne and open up an escape route.  The Axis are able to pummel the Americans from all directions with Artillery, Mortars, and Tanks, while the Americans force their powerful Armor across the countryside and toward the Exit hexes.

Objectives:

The Americans need to break through the German roadblock and open the way to Bastogne.

Six Medals.  There are also two Exit Medal Objectives for the Americans to breakthrough.

Battlefield:

Winter conditions, with roads and rivers cutting through the battlefield.

Troops:

Allies – 5 Infantry, 6 Armor, 1 Artillery

Axis – 5 Infantry, including some SWA’s (Mortars), 6 Armor including two Tank Destroyers (2,2,2,2),  3 Artillery

Special Rules:

1.  Winter Combat rules – two hex armor movement

2.  Reduced Visibility rules – only hit with Grenades unless in Close Assault

2.  Special Weapon Asset rules for Mortars – 3,2,1,1

3.  The river is frozen, but impassable.

1.  Primary Objective is to break through and provide a passage to Bastogne so the troops can be rescued, as they were, historically.  You may want to keep the roadblock in place, so that your Armor can exit to the east without worry about rearguard action.  

2.  Your forces are congested in the town of Bastogne.  Retreat flags from the enemy will cause losses, so you will want to spread them out by moving your forces east along the road toward the Exit hex.  Remember that with winter conditions, you will only be able to move your Armor three hexes at a time on the road (instead of the usual four).

3.  If you have the cards for it, some gains can be had by removing the roadblock and heading west to attack the enemy directly. Otherwise, they will continue to pummel you from the woods in the north, and with their Artillery and Mortars to your southwest.  

medal axisAxis Strategy:

1.  You have the enemy completely surrounded, except for that pesky escape route along the road.  Move to block the Exit hexes ASAP.  It will only take two turns for the Allies to begin evacuating along the road.

2.  With three Artillery and two Mortar units, you can continuously attack the enemy and decimate their forces.  

3.  Remember that the Limited Visibility rules require that, unless you are in Close Combat, typically only Grenades will score a hit.  But Retreat Flags can be a very effective way to reduce the enemy in their congested situation in Bastogne. 

3.  Move the two Armor on your right and center section into the two forest hexes across the river from Bastogne.  From there you will be able to safely pick off the enemy bit by bit throughout the battle. 

4.  Take the time to move the Artillery on your right flank forward at least one row forward.  It will pay off every turn afterwards with increased firepower against the enemy hiding like cowards in Bastogne.

Let me tell you something: Bastogne Corridor West was a knockout punch thrown in a snowstorm, and our boys delivered it with grit frozen to their faces.

In late December ’44, the Germans came crashing in from the west, hell-bent on slicing through the lifeline that kept Bastogne alive. They thought they could slam the door shut before the Third Army reached the paratroopers. Well, they were wrong.

Patton’s tankers, infantry, gunners, and flyboys stood their ground in the worst winter Europe had seen in years. The enemy hit hard—armor, guns, the works—but our men hit harder. Through drifts, smoke, and steel, they held that corridor like it was the spine of the whole damn war—because it was.

By beating back that counterattack, we kept Bastogne supplied, kept the line unbroken, and broke the enemy’s last real chance to split our forces. It was a turning point in the Bulge, and it proved once again: when the Allies are cornered, they don’t fold—they fight their way out.

Summary:

This is a reverse of the Corridor East scenario. But in this scenario both forces are pressed up against their respective borders. The scattered forests in the center of the battlefield are up for grabs to whomever can get to them first.

Objectives:

6 medals including territorial medals for each side by controlling their town objectives.

Terrain:

Winter, wooded, with open plains for fun tank battles

Troops:

Allies – 8 Infantry, 7 Armor, 2 Artillery

Axis – 6 Infantry, 6 Armor, 1 Artillery

Allies:

1.  Big picture strategy for Allies is to quickly mobilize your forces before the enemy armor moves in for attack.  Get your Infantry into defensive positions in the towns of Moricy, Remagne, Lavaselle, and Sibret if you can.  This will slow the Axis attack while you mobilize your own Armor.

2. You have two Artillery.  If the enemy moves forward quickly, you can begin using them immediately. If they delay advancement, you can move your own Artillery forward one or two hexes. Air Power cards are played as Artillery Bombardment, so it will be good to have your Artillery in a forward position, should that card become available.

 3.  The Axis have the advantage of being closer to the forests. So they will be able to place their Armor in there, and blast you if you try to make a frontal assault out in the open middle section. Your best attack vector is your left flank, where your forces can move forward under the protection of the towns and forest’s on that side. 

4.  Wait them out in the center section until either they come out from the forests, or you have the cards for a massive assault.  Of course, if you can capture the forests first, that is the way to go.

 

Axis:

1.  Big picture strategy is to move your Infantry into the forests, and mobilize your Armor rapidly for some early hits against the enemy before they have had a chance to mobilize.

2. Because there are a lot of open spaces, and a lot of Armor, this can become very much a tank battle. So choose your section and focus of attack carefully. The center section gives your forces the most mobility.

 3.  Capture the center forest hexes. Then begin moving your artillery and your right flank forces forward to put pressure on the enemy.

4.  Keep the pressure on your left flank. If you get close enough to the town of Sibret, in the corner, near the end of the game you can grab that as your last Medal.
