WW2 Timeline
Here are key dates in World War II:
- September 1, 1939 – Germany invades Poland, triggering the start of World War II.
- September 3, 1939 – Britain and France declare war on Germany, officially starting the conflict.
- June 22, 1940 – France surrenders to Germany, leading to German occupation.
- July 10, 1940 – Battle of Britain begins, marking a significant air campaign over the UK.
- June 22, 1941 – Operation Barbarossa: Nazi Germany invades the Soviet Union.
- December 7, 1941 – Attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan, bringing the US into the war.
- June 4-7, 1942 – Battle of Midway, a turning point in the Pacific War in favor of the Allies.
- August 23, 1942 – February 2, 1943 – Battle of Stalingrad, one of the war’s deadliest battles and a major turning point on the Eastern Front.
- June 6, 1944 – D-Day (Operation Overlord): Allied forces land in Normandy, France.
- May 8, 1945 – Victory in Europe (V-E Day): Germany surrenders, ending the war in Europe.
- August 6 & 9, 1945 – Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, forcing Japan toward surrender.
- September 2, 1945 – Japan formally surrenders, officially ending World War II.
