[Ukraine] Soviet Raid on Grigorevka

In September 1941, during the Siege of Odessa, Soviet forces mounted a bold amphibious‐parachute raid at Grigorevka to knock out Romanian artillery threatening the city.
-
Forces & Leadership: The raid was led at sea by Captain Koren’ commanding the 3rd Naval Infantry Regiment (≈1,900 men) and on land by a 23‑man parachute detachment.
-
Plan: On the night of September 21–22, Kuznetsov’s paratroopers were dropped inland near Hill 57.3 to sever communications and sow confusion, while simultaneously Koren’s naval infantry landed at Grigorevka under cover of naval gunfire from destroyers Bojkij and Bezuprechnyj.
-
Outcome: Despite heavy seas and scattered parachute drops, the paratroopers destroyed a Romanian regimental HQ, and Koren’s marines captured the key batteries. By dawn they linked up with the 421st Rifle Division, forcing the 13th and 15th Romanian Divisions to withdraw and relieving pressure on Odessa’s defenses.
This joint sea‑land‑air operation was one of the few early‐war Soviet amphibious raids, showcasing the initiative of Captain Koren’ and the effectiveness of combined‐arms tactics in the Black Sea.
