STRATEGY & TACTICS: The Bastogne Battles
How to Win the Bastogne Corridors
There are two really interesting scenarios which recreate the conditions of the defense of Bastogne in the winter of '44:
- Bastogne Corridor East
- Bastogne Corridor West
They are companion scenarios depicting attacks on Bastogne from opposite directions, but they are not simply mirror-image copies. They use similar themes, victory conditions, and terrain concepts, yet the battlefield layouts and force dispositions differ.
Bastogne Corridor East
- Represents the German push toward Bastogne from the east.
- Allies begin controlling roughly two-thirds of the battlefield.
- Germans have the initiative and superior offensive strength.
- Exit medals are a major Axis objective.
- Scattered forests across much of the board.
- Allied forces are concentrated defensively.
- Allied armor is clustered on one flank.
- Multiple choke-points slow German armor.
- Allied player fights a delaying action.
- Axis player seeks a breakthrough.
- Emphasis on maneuvering tanks around terrain rather than charging through it.
- Exit hexes create urgency for both sides.
Bastogne Corridor West
- Represents the simultaneous German pressure from the west side of the Bastogne corridor.
- Historically tied to the effort to close off or seize the road network around Bastogne. (Although there are no roads in this scenario.)
- Occasional forest hexes
- Terrain tends to channel forces differently than the eastern approach.
- Less about defending a broad front.
- More about controlling movement corridors and preventing penetration.
- Battles tend to become concentrated around key passageways and villages.

TACTICAL ACTIONS TO TAKE AND WIN:
1. Big Picture Strategy BASTOGNE EAST:
🔥Winning as ALLIES: Focus on defending villages and choke-points, leveraging defensive terrain and slowing down Axis tanks. Keep units close to key areas like the exit markers to prevent breakthroughs.
🔥Winning as AXIS: Use tanks’ mobility to avoid prolonged battles in forests and villages. Concentrate forces for a decisive breakthrough toward the exit markers or to capture critical objectives like villages.
2. BIG PICTURE STRATEGY BASTOGNE WEST:
1. Big picture strategy for Allies is to quickly mobilize your forces before the enemy armor moves in for attack. Get your Infantry into defensive positions in the towns of Moricy, Remagne, Lavaselle, and Sibret if you can. This will slow the Axis attack while you mobilize your own Armor.
1. Big picture strategy is to move your Infantry into the forests, and mobilize your Armor rapidly for some early hits against the enemy before they have had a chance to mobilize.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CAMPAIGN IDEA: One interesting campaign idea would be to play Corridor East followed immediately by Corridor West, carrying over medals or surviving units between games to simulate the larger struggle to keep Bastogne open during the Battle of the Bulge.
