Back in the day, Days of Wonder used to provide scenario win-loss percentages, so that you could see which side had the advantage historically in any scenario. Those seem to be out of date now. But no fear!

Strategy Tips: The Danger of Over-Extending
|
It is so tempting sometimes to take one's armored forces and keep moving and attacking relentlessly, until finally they realize they are deep into enemy territory.
|
When the enemy does this to you, it is time to make them pay for their insolence!
|
This is especially possible in a scenario like Counter-Attack on Mortain. Because the Axis launched a massive tank attack, they can go overboard.
|
|
Take a look at this attack scenario.
|
|
|
The Axis have made some successful attacks and have pushed their Armor deep into the Allied territory. They are on rows 3 and 4 in their attempt to gain the Territorial Medal prize at L1. But they have over-extended their welcome, and their forces.
|
|
The Allies respond with a devastating General Advance card, and are able to mobilize six units to repel the Axis attack. The first two Infantry units are able to deal revenge to the armor, with successful rolls against each. The next two Artillery rolls, are able to take out one more Armor figure in the unit at F7.
|
|
|
Finally, two Allied Armor units are able to move to positions f4 and D5, preparing for a final death blow to the now single Armor figure at F7 on the next turn.
|

Lessons from General Howitzer

|
Let's talk about Artillery.
|
As much as we love tanks and aircraft, artillery was the predominant weapon of WW2. "More than half of all casualties on all battle fronts came from the ever more deadly concentrations of artillery fire." (The Illustrated Encyclopedia of World Wars I & II)
|
As you know Artillery has three target zones, 1-2 hexes away are 3D (3 Dice), 3-4 hexes away are 2D, and 5-6 hexes away are 1D. Artillery dice throws of 2D is considered full attack power, while 3D is super-powered, while 1D is considered lite attack range. A wise commander will do his best to stay outside of the 3D and 2D attack zones.

General strategy guideline is that if the game is 5 VP's or less, and you can win the game by taking out other units without doing a direct attack on Artillery, do it. But for most games of 6 VP's or more, you will generally have to face the reality that the Artillery must be dealt with.
|
So your strategy should include a plan to take out the Artillery. If you are lucky, you may get a Barrage or Airpower card to help the process. But it may require a direct assault with Infantry if there are no other options.
|
|
Overall, remember that Artillery is powerful and dangerous. Your battle plans need to factor in consideration of how to deal with any Artillery units on your battlefield.
