Three Common Tactical Mistakes to Avoid
There are several mistakes which some Memoir 44 commanders make which cost them the battle.
"Too early" means before all your forces are in place. This is like sending one lone infantryman into the battle without any support from tanks, aircraft, or other infantry units. Get your forces ready. The enemy will still be there while you prepare.
2. Not maximizing all long-range options first.
There is no point in risking your Infantry. You can attack the enemy from a distance first. Use your Artillery, Armor, and any specail tactic cards like Airpower or Barrage first. Soften up the enemy. Then when your Infantry moves in, they can finish them off, and you can take territory.
3. Not planning your next two moves.
Yes, two moves! Think ahead like in chess. Plan not just your next attack, but put together two or more into a plan. Choose your objectives and then stick to it. Use Strategy (plans), not just Tactics (attacks), to win the game.
These three techniques could result in an improvement of one to two medals per game. Waiting to attack rather than attacking too early, will by itself preserve and protect your Infantry. And using all your long-range options first will diminish the enemy's ability to respond and attack you, which could also save you a unit or two. And finally, planning your next two moves will put the enemy on defensive and give you the advantage of the initiative.

Lessons from General Howitzer
Infantry Tactics during WW2
WWII ushered in the age of modern combined arms warfare, with infantry, armor, and artillery working in close coordination.
The squad became the foundational building block of infantry tactics. The 12-man squad was centered around the firepower of the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), with the squad leader coordinating the men.
M44 - Uses the 4-man unit, but the effect is the same. Take care of your squads/units and they will take care of you. Do not throw them away on useless attacks, but also recognize that a group of Infantry units with combined attack power can deal significant damage to the enemy.
2. Movement and Formations:
Squads used formations like the squad column for rapid movement under cover and the skirmish line for engaging the enemy in open terrain. Short, quick rushes were used to advance under enemy fire.
M44 - Use forests, towns, hills and other defensive terrain to your advantage to lessen the impact of the enemy's return fire, while your Infantry gets into close fighting proximity.
American infantry leveraged their superior semi-automatic weaponry, like the M1 Garand rifle, to gain fire superiority over the enemy, suppressing them to enable maneuver.
M44 - The only way that this is employed in M44 are those cases where you have a Special Weapons Asset (SWA), which can kill Armor with a Star, or Infantry with a Star. These can tip the balance in your favor by increasing your hit percentage by 17% per unit.
4. Combined Arms Approach:
On the tactical level, infantry worked with tanks to neutralize enemy strong points, while tanks provided cover and support. On the operational level, air support became crucial for softening up enemy positions.
M44 - Whenever possible combine your attacks with Armor, Infantry, and Artillery together. Do not send your Infantry out alone if you can be assisted by more powerful weaponry.

Capture of Asosa
Listen up—this is how wars are won. In March of ’41, a hard-fighting outfit from the Belgian Congo—the 11th Battalion of the Force Publique—marched into Abyssinia to take the fight straight to the Italians. No hesitation, no excuses. They clawed their way up the brutal high ground of Mount Kirin, took their hits in ambushes near Asosa and Megale, and …

Easy Company - Paradrop in the Night

They dropped our boys all over hell and back—but that didn’t stop them. The 506th Parachute Infantry hit the Normandy bocage scattered, disorganized, and under fire. But Americans don’t wait for perfect conditions—we make them. Lieutenant Richard Winters pulled together what he had—35 men—and went looking for the fight. Through hedgerows thick as walls and Germans lurking in every field, …
