Take a look at this pic. This is about 3 turns into the Memoir 44 battle known as Operation Spring. The Axis begin this scenario in a strong position finding themselves very close to controlling the series of hills in the center of the battlefield.  With control of the city of Verrieres and the hill, they are in a dominant position to execute their will upon the enemy forces beneath them.

So this is the situation you want; to have your armor on top of the hill, and forcing the enemy - even though there is a lot of them - having to fight a literally "uphill battle" and only roll 2D against each of your Axis armor.
