FROM CAMAIORE TO BARGA (BrEF)
Having taken Massarossa and Camaiore, the Brazilians moved north capturing small towns on the way. By the end of the month they had conquered Monte Prana and controlled the Serchio valley. In October, they took Fornaci before descending upon Barga. On October 11 1944, as townspeople cheered on the Brazilians as they entered in jeeps. A partisan who had entered the town two days earlier screamed out… “Get off of the streets!”
The Axis troops who had withdrawn to the surrounding hills had unleashed a hail of rifle and machine gun down on to the streets of Barga scattering people in all directions.
