COUNTER-ATTACK IN SOMMOCOLONIA (BrEF)
The FEB 1st Battalion was ordered to gain control of the small elevated settlement of Sommocolonia (A municipality of Barga) on October 24 1944. It was the first time that the small town had been entered by Allied troops during WW2 and was reached via a mule track now called the USA Buffalo Trail. A small number of Italians defended the position. Upon seeing the Brazilians they greeted them and shouted… “Cameratti! Cameratti!” (Comrades) before surrendering without a fight.
The Brazilian command did not send any reinforcements to the troops at the top of the chain of hills – a costly mistake with serious consequences. At 02:30 on October 31 1944, a combination of German and Italian battalions attacked the Brazilian positions. Overwhelmed and low on ammunition, the Brazilians were forced to abandon the position after 11 hours of fighting.
